Whether this song: »What I Am« [written and performed 1988 by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians & then also covered by Emma Bunton] is a subtle metaphysical one?

Lyrics:
» What I Am «
I'm not aware of too many things.
I know what I know if you know what I mean.
I'm not aware of too many things.
I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Philosophy is the talk on a cereal box.
Religion is the smile on a dog.
I'm not aware of too many things.
I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Do ya?
Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep.
What I am is what I am,
You're what you are – or what?
What I am is what I am,
You're what you – or what?
I'm not aware of too many things.
I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Philosophy is a walk on the slippery rocks.
Religion is the light in a fog.
I'm not aware of too many things.
I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Do ya?
Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep.
Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep.
What I am is what I am,
You're what you are – or what?
What I am is what I am,
You're what you are – or what?
What I am is what I am,
You're what you are – or what you are.
What I am is what I am,
You're what you are – or what?
Na na na na.
I say, I say, I say.
Do do, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep.
What I am is what I am,
You're what you are – or what?
What I am is what I am,
You're what you are – or what?
What I am is what I am,
You're what you are – or what you are.
What I am is what I am,
You're what you are – or what?
What I am is what I am,
You're what you are – or what?
What I am is what I am,
You're what you are – or what you are.

Dear Antonello,
It is astonishing how we are often syntonic as for philosophical sixth sense! I am so glad you introduced this marvellous song. You know, my childhood was somehow conditoned by it... The song was written by Edie Brickell and Kenny Withrow and performed by Eddie and the Bohemians in 1988. It was then performed in 1999 by Emma Bunton, ex spice- girl, but with a completely different, less evocative performance than Edie’s one.
I was 11 when I first heard this song and when I heard the word “philosophy” I tried to find out what that really meant(my people could not explain it!). This way my interest in philosophy was aroused...
It is lightly metaphysical and rich in metaphorical facets.
I'm not aware of too many things.
I know what I know if you know what I mean
Is the expression of a hermeneutical importance from which derives the direct and symbolic consent. It can be read both as a metaphysical, a logic, psychological and sociological hint to the “sense”! ;-)
“Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep”
Is shocking and, in my humble opinion, gives a clear representation of the relationship of human beings with the metaphysical sphere, with the absolute or simply with the unknown, with pain or sorrow. It is somehow Sartreian, maybe (it reminds me Sartre’s words on suicide, but it’s just a mental flash). Perhaps it could be defined as an existential (and not an existentialist) song, just for it avoids, for the representation of the philosophical viewpoint of practical reality, the suffocating load of a pedantic learning.
Besides I reckon the modernity has always given the “deepness” a too important role in the knowledge process. I mean, “deepness” is not necessarily the nodal point in which wisdom lies.I think Nietzsche would agree. I am afraid the modern culture is being suffocated, phagocyted by deepness. I dunno whether Eddie meant to express that, but if so, I find it very original and predicting of the hyper-deepness of contemporary knowledge in our “multi-skill community”.
Just in virtue of what I ve been saying, I won’t feel guilty for being shallow, in case! (ah ah)
I hope u liked my e-card for the New Year.
Take care.
